Fochville motorists raise safety concerns over R500 road repair work

Residents claim poor workmanship on the R500 between Fochville and the R54 has left the road uneven and potentially dangerous, while transport officials have yet to respond.

Residents of the Fochville area complain that work being done on one of the area’s roads leaves much to be desired.

Motorists who regularly use the section of the R500 between Fochville and the R54 that is under repair say the work does not meet previous standards and leaves them feeling unsafe.

According to one of the concerned residents, Dolf le Grange, the workers seem to be causing more damage than they are doing good.

“In some places the tar seems to be only about a cm deep. It is a safety hazard,” he complains and adds that this road is now in such a bad state that some people do not want to drive on it anymore.

The Herald went to check this road on June 25.

Although the contractors were previously fixing the road near the R54 intersection, they have now moved closer to Fochville. In some places, the road is very uneven, and in others, new patches of tar seem to have been laid on pieces of the road that were recently re-tarred, which is very unusual.

The workers manning the stop-and-go points are, however, friendly and efficient.

The Herald asked the Department of Roads and Transport’s Krugersdorp Regional Manager, Bulelwa Thomas, about the problems. No reply was received by printing time.
