Growing sinkhole threatens road and infrastructure near Khutsong

Unrepaired sinkhole has spread beneath a stormwater canal and is putting nearby infrastructure and services at risk.

A sinkhole being ignored by the Merafong City Local Municipality has grown to such an extent that it is now endangering substantial municipal infrastructure.

The Herald first reported on the growing hole close to the road between Khutsong and Welverdiend in March last year.

The hole is situated next to the fence separating the end of Khutsong South and the large stormwater canal leading past it.

Although the hole was small at first, it has grown to such an extent that it has caused some of the palisades next to the canal to collapse with it. The hole has also spread under the canal itself, revealing a water or sewerage pipe.

If a section of the canal should also collapse, stormwater would gush into the gaping hole, most probably causing it to cave in even further.

his might even endanger the safety of the road to Welverdiend.

If the pipe in the hole is damaged, it can lead to a disruption of water or sewerage services in the area.
The pensioner whose house is closest to the sinkhole, Yvonne Morekudi, has continually expressed her fear about the worsening conditions to the Herald.

“I worry a lot about this hole, especially at night. Everyone just comes here to check, then they leave again,” she said previously.

Although the Herald reached out to the municipality various times about the problem, no feedback was received.
