The police in Carletonville warn that hijacking is becoming a big problem in our area.

According to Captain Plastiek Janse van Vuuren, there are things that motorists can do to protect themselves from this crime:

Motorists must be observant of their surroundings at all times. If something does not look or feel right, drive away, stay clear of the area and phone the police.

Always keep your vehicle’s doors locked, its windows closed and valuables out of sight.

Do not respond to other motorists or pedestrians indicating that something is wrong with your vehicle. Rather, drive to the nearest garage or police station.

In case of a breakdown, phone emergency services or your insurance company immediately.

Also be aware of people asking for directions and keep your house and car keys separate. Do not try to remove or move obstacles in the road. If it is safe to do so, drive around them and report it to the SAPS.

Avoid driving the same routes to and from work, shops or any of the places you visit regularly and avoid quiet streets or areas notorious for hijacking.

Never pick up strangers or hitchhikers.
