Local athlete off to World Championships

Watch her performance on television.

A star athlete who hails from our area will be travelling overseas to take part in a big international event.

Atang Naane is part of the 4x100m relay team that will take part in the U20 World Athletics Championships in Lima in Peru.

This year’s world championships will take place between August 27 to 31.

According to Atang’s mother, Catherine, her daughter will be travelling to Peru this weekend.

“She has always been a very good athlete. She used to be in Laerskool Danie Theron and was the best athlete of the day when they were competing at Westfields Primary School when she was in grade seven,” says Catherine.

Atang is currently a Grade 12 learner of Hammanskraal Prestige High, a specialised sports school.

“I’m just a single parent raising my two daughters, but I am also a keen athlete. I’m running for Sibanye in the Master’s category,” says Catherine.

As a single parent she is struggling to raise enough money for Atang’s international participation. Anyone who can assist can contact Catherine on 067 126 4242.

Atang already excelled in athletics when she was a learner at Laerskool Danie Theron.
