Long grass, especially in Coronation Street in Carletonville currently poses a serious danger to motorists and other road users alike. At the beginning of February, the Herald reported that the grass in large areas of the town had not yet been cut. In some busy streets, the grass was so long that it obscured the approaching traffic. Although the grass on the islands of town’s busiest streets like Annan Road and Dolomite and Onyx drive was cut shortly afterwards, the grass on various busy sidewalks and parks was still overgrown this week. The grass on the sides of Coronation Street near Dolomite Drive had grown so long that it is currently almost impossible for motorists to see other cars approaching around corners. Even high SUVs are almost completely obscured by the long grass. To make matters worse, there is nowhere for pedestrians or cyclists to get out of the way due to the overgrowth. As this section of Coronation Street is not as wide as some of the town’s other main routes, cyclists or pedestrians literally have to move into the shoulder-high grass to stay out of danger’s way when vehicles are passing on both sides of the road at the same time. In one place, someone had also dumped rubbish onto the side of the road surface, making it even more dangerous, especially for cyclists who now have to swerve further into the road to avoid it. Mr Carlos Rebelo, a councillor from the area who uses this road to and from home every day, says it is a huge issue that grass like this is just not getting cut. “It is extremely dangerous and shocking that no one is doing anything about it,” he said on Mon- day. The Herald took his concerns to a spokesperson for the Merafong City Local Municipality on Tuesday. “As previously indicated, although there is a backlog in grass cutting, areas where grass can impact on traffic, such as traffic islands, will always be cut,” he said.
