A man in the prime of his life jumped to his death from a window in Carletonville Hospital on Monday. According to the police in Carletonville, the man, who was in his early thirties, went missing from the ward where he was being treated somewhere between 13:00 and 14:00. Family members found that he was not in his bed and they, together with hospital personnel, started sear- ching for him. At around 15:45 they discovered that the door to one of the toilets on the hospital’s third floor was locked. After forcing it open,
they saw that the toilet window had been opened. They looked down through it and saw the missing man’s body lying in a shaft.
The police are currently busy investigating an inquest case. The Herald also asked Carletonville Hospital for comment on the matter. ‘The matter is being investigated and, based on the findings of the investigation, measures will be implemented to minimise the chances of a recurrence,’ the hospital’s spokesperson, Mr Matabo Letsoalo, told the Herald on Tuesday. Around 2009, Carletonville Hospital became notorious for similar cases after several patients jumped to their deaths from hospital windows. After the hospital put various safety measures in place, these incidents came to a halt.
