Champions Athletics Club on the go again

Many sports clubs around the Merafong City municipal area are opening after the lockdown regulations were eased, and Champions Athletics Club from Carletonville is no exception.

“This year has been very difficult and different,” says their coach Afika Ndlazi.
According to him, no sports being allowed on school premises due to the pandemic has greatly affected the club’s ath- letes. Training could also not take place since the second wave of the pandemic hit the country. Since then, the club’s 50 members or so have had to practise at home. “Our plan for this year is to try and get back into form and get fit enough because I believe the athletics season – when it comes – is going to be hectic. Sadly, we cannot say when we will have an event because we do not know when the third wave of the corona- virus will hit and how it will affect our training programmes and competitions,” says Ndlazi.
Despite the challenges, the club will host an event that will be broadcast live on SABC television.
“It will be very soon, but we cannot give a specific date at this stage due to the pandemic. Luckily, none of the club members has contracted the virus so far,” says Ndlazi.
The club has also opened a branch in Fochville. It plans to open an academy once sports activities are underway again. Training in Fochville takes place at the Gert van Rensburg stadum.
