Residents do it themselves

Last week, a group of Carletonville residents proved that they can do much better work than the municipality.

People living around Letaba Street and a part of Kaolin Street were previously stuck without electricity for almost a week after thieves plundered the electrical substation in Letaba Street. Despite the ratepayers’ pleas, the Merafong City Local Municipality had not secured this substation before the crime.
The residents cut the grass at the substation, upgraded the fence, and even put up a gate with locks. They also installed burglar bars on the windows and equipped the facility with solar lights and an alarm. The alarm is linked to a local security company’s system.
They also cut the grass in the park between Kaolin and Mooi Street and picked up all the rubbish.
All the work was done with contributions from residents in the area.
The area’s ward councillor, Mr Carlos Rebelo, applauded the residents’ hard work.
