Khayalethu residents fear more sinkholes as municipality delays repairs

Community members say sewage leaks, damaged infrastructure and unresolved sinkhole dangers continue months after taxis nearly plunged into a massive hole.

Community members are concerned that the municipality has still not yet sorted out all the issues at the site where two minibus taxis almost fell into a sinkhole in December last year.

A sinkhole caved in where a municipal contractor left a ditch open near the old Teacher’s Quarters in Khayalethu on December 3.

Residents watched in shock as two minibus-taxis that had been parked in the front garden of Dorah Motladile (72) hung over the side of the sinkhole.

Although the sinkhole was closed soon after the incident, the pipeline next to it was completely dug open again, posing a huge danger to residents in the area.

Although it has since been closed, Motladile’s neighbour, Elias Mkhabela, says the municipality has still not sorted out all the issues at the site.

He showed the Herald last week how sewage was leaking into the ground from a pipe that was still not connected to a new manhole erected as part of the work earlier this year.

Although the municipality or its contractor did some work on this leak during the past week, the ground was still wet on Monday.

This shows that sewage was, most probably, still leaking at the site.

The municipality has also not yet fixed Motladile’s wall, which had collapsed into the sinkhole. They have also done nothing about two other older sinkholes that are just metres away.

The Herald took the problems to the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, on Monday. No feedback was received by printing time.
