Merafong’s MM admits reason for water problems

The municipality owes Rand Water almost R1 billion.

While many residents are having to make do without water at their homes, the municipal manager, Dumisani Mabuza, has finally admitted that the water shortages in our area stems from the Merafong City Local Municipality not paying its Rand Water account.

Although the municipality refused to answer questions about the matter earlier, the municipality issued a press release a short while ago in which it admits that Rand Water has cut Merafong’s water supply with 70 per cent, with leaves us with only 30 per cent of our normal water supply.

Mabuza says that Merafong paid Rand Water R10 million of its outstanding monthly account today, while R17 million was paid last week.

If Merafong should not pay what is left of their outstanding montly account, our Rand Water debt will rise to more than R1 billion.

The municipality again asked residents to pay for services and that those in debt should register for its new payment incentive scheme.
