SAPS busts miner with explosives in Carletonville CBD

The police in the West Rand together with the Hawks and Sibanye-Stillwater’s security busted two employees of this mining house for serious offences during the past 24 hours.

The 36-year-old male employee was arrested in the Carletonville CBD this afternoon in a sting operation organized by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Carletonville Detectives, the SAPS Highway Patrol and the West Rand Explosives Unit. The operation started at approximately 13:00.

According to the SAPS West Rand District Commissioner, General Fred Kekana, the man was taken down after intensive investigation into the selling and distribution of explosives to cash in transit robbers during the past months.

The suspect was found in possession of explosives, fuses and detonators. The police also found R30 000 in the cubbyhole of his white VW City Golf.

They then went to his house in Carletonville Extension 9 where several fuses were also found hidden in clothes drawers.

Meanwhile a 38-year-old female mine employee was also arrested at East Driefontein in possession of seven kilograms of amalgamated gold worth R14 million at approximately 23:30 last night. She already appeared in the Oberholzer Magistrates Court today. She did not receive bail and will appear in court again on Tuesday.

Kekana expressed his satisfaction with the work done by the police.

“We are dealing with the criminals,” he said.

This arrest was made with the help of Sibanye-Stillwater’s Security.

The suspect has R30 000 in his car’s cubbyhole.
The police also found further evidence at his home in Jacobs Street in Carletonville Extension 9.
