A mineworker died in an accident at Blyvoor Gold mine earlier today (Saturday 22 April) while several of his colleagues were injured.

Several ambulances and a helicopter were called to the mine at around midday after several miners were injured. Some miners were also trapped underground, but were luckily rescued.

One miner was killed during the incident, while 17 mine workers were evacuated to Fountain and Lenmed private hospitals. The injuries of three of the injured are serious.

According to the mine’s general manager, Mr Louis Lamsley, he was informed that a “bump” or seismic jolt, caused the accident. He is currently not at the mine due to illness.
