Carleton Jones High is again Merafong’s top school

CJ is the only government school in our area with a 100 per cent pass rate.

Carleton Jones High School’s matriculants emerged as the top performers in the Merafong City Local Municipality again.

The school was the only public one with a 100 per cent pass rate. The 177 matriculants of the past year excelled when they improved significantly on the 89.4 per cent of the previous year.

The learner with the best individual performance, Caitlyn Paige Motiram, obtained four distinctions in Accounting, Business Studies, Economics and Life Orientation.

The first six matriculants of the area’s only private school, Aster Private Academy, also achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.

Imfundo Secondary School in Kokosi was the second-best public school in our area; their 127 matriculants obtained a pass rate of 97.6 per cent, up from 89.2 per cent last year.

Hoërskool Fochville came third with a pass rate of 94.3 per cent. This school had 123 matriculants and came down slightly from the previous year’s pass rate of 97.4 per cent, but were the ninth best in the region.
Several more local schools scored 80 per cent or higher. Thuto Kitso Comprehensive School in Kokosi had a pass rate of 88.8 per cent. This school had 214 matriculants and improved from 77.1 per cent last year. Letsatsing Secondary School’s 179 matriculants achieved a pass rate of 88.3 per cent, a considerable improvement on last year’s 77.9 per cent.
Fochville Secondary School has a pass rate of 88.1 per cent. This school had only 42 matriculants but improved drastically from 56.5 per cent last year. As a result, it was the school with the highest improvement in its results.

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Carletonville’s 198 matriculants obtained a pass rate of 85.9 per cent, slightly lower than last year’s 91.7 per cent.

Two of their learners, Tshegofatso Mahuma and Franzelle du Plessis, obtained four distinctions each. Hoërskool Wonderfontein’s 77 matriculants achieved a pass rate of 84.4 per cent, an improvement from last year’s 81.5 per cent, while Tswasongu Secondary School’s 158 matriculants obtained an 82.9 per cent pass rate; an improvement from last year’s 79.7 per cent.

Two local schools had pass rates of 70 per cent or higher.

Wedela Technical High School’s 127 matriculants had a pass rate of 77.4 per cent – a significant improvement on last year’s 58.9 per cent. Badirile Secondary School’s 241 matriculants scored 73.9 per cent, up from 65.1 per cent last year. Relebogile Secondary School was the area’s worst performer after a sinkhole that caved in at the school in March 2023 disrupted the schooling of its 192 matriculants. Its 62.8 per cent score was slightly down from last year’s 63.4 per cent.

Mariska du Piesanie from Hoërskool Fochville obtained five distinctions in Afrikaans (HT), English (EAT), Life Orientation, Accounting and Computer Application Technology with an average of 80,43 per cent.
Nicole Standing of Hoërskool Fochville obtained five distinctions in Afrikaans (HT), English (EAT), Life Orientation, Accounting and Life Sciences with an average of 83,43 per cent.
Melanie Kleyn was the third learner from Hoërskool Fochville to obtain five distinctions in Afrikaans (HT), English (EAT), Life Orientation, Engineering Graphics and Design, and Geography.
