Fochville resident semi-finalist in big pageant

She wants to use the opportunity to make a difference.

“There is always a place where you can make a difference.”

These are the words of Mrs Karmenn Goosen from Fochville, who became a semi-finalist in the Mrs Universe South Africa this week.

Goosen wants to use her position in this national pageant to make a difference in other people’s lives. According to her, a finalist in the Mrs Bold SA pageant, Sanita Persens, motivated her to enter the pageant at the end of February. She ran into Persens during a trip to OR Tambo International Airport to meet a relative.

“I teach my daughter, Marizaan, that women never have to stand back for anyone. We saw Sanita wearing her sash, and I asked whether we could photograph my daughter with her as motivation. In the end, she encouraged me to enter a pageant myself. She says a stay-at-home mom like me is the ideal candidate to use an entry in a pageant to make a difference,” says Goosen.

She says she has always been particularly concerned about the plight of severely disadvantaged women. It has stuck with her that, in some countries elsewhere in Africa, women often have very few choices about what happens in their lives. She believes that somewhere, somehow, we can all help one another.

Often, emotional support makes more of a difference than money. The perfectly-groomed Goosen, always in high heels, has lived with her family – her husband Marius, son Markus and her daughter in Fochville for the past 11 years.

She has already contacted several local non-profit organisations like the Carletonville SPCA to see how she can help them through her journey in the pageant. The organisers will announce the finalists in the Mrs Universe South Africa pageant in September.
