We all know that superstitions are very interesting but not too many of us believe they are true. Superstitions are based on beliefs, not facts, but we love paying attention to them – just in case. There are so many superstitions that we know or have heard about. Like, do you really think walking under a ladder or opening an umbrella inside will bring you bad luck? That, if you eat from a pot, it’ll rain on you wedding day? I personally don’t believe in superstitions and yet I will go out of my way to avoid walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella inside the house or eating food from a pot.
Superstitions are beliefs or practices for which there really is no rational explanation. Most people agree that these events are not really valid and that the “bad things” associated with them are just coincidences. But, they follow the beliefs – just in case! I’d like to explain a few, simple superstitions that we come across every day. Bird waste brings good luck: There is a belief that if a bird poops on you, you may receive good luck and riches. The more birds involved, the richer you will be! Opening an umbrella indoors: According to superstition, if you open an umbrella indoors, you are literally asking for bad luck to “rain on you”. One explanation for this comes from the days when umbrellas were used as protection from the sun – which they still
are – and opening one inside a house was an insult to the sun god, who then cursed you with bad luck. Interesting, huh? Itchy palms: There seem to be many different variations of this superstition. Most people say that, if you right palm itches, money is coming your way. And, if you left palm is itchy, then you will be losing money. There are so many interesting superstitions to hear about, but don’t let them change the way you think. Remember, they’re only beliefs, not facts.
