South Africa is such a diverse country and has wonderful people with different personalities. While growing up, especially in the townships, we develop a way of talking (mostly using slang) with our fellow peers. But, we young people should know when we are talking to elder people and not use slang words because they will just not understand us. We use so many slang words in our daily lives, no matter whether we are old or young. I like to use “ awe awe ”, when I greet a friend or, perhaps, say goodbye, and I am sure others do the same. This is usually followed by kasi (township) slang (tsotsitaal) for those who may want to experience the “lokshin” (location). We also like to use words like “jislaaik, jussie, yoh, haibo”, and “hau” when we are really confused, surprised or shocked by something or someone. “Ag shame” is another favourite when we are feeling bad for someone and don’t have the correct words to make him/her feel better. Actually, I personally I think it may also be used in just about every social situation. Seriously, when in doubt, just say “Ag shame” and your sentiment will be greatly appreciated. For example: He – “I just got a new puppy.” She – “Ag shame.” It’s like the girl does not want to have a conversation with the boy… Then, the last one is “klap”. It can get even more serious, ha-ha. A “snotklap” is a “mucous slap”, taken from the mental image of slapping someone so hard that you just see snot fly. We use so much slang in South Africa that we may often get confused by what someone is saying.
