No water again for Glenanda South residents

After Glenanda South had more burst water pipes over the weekend it's quite obvious the matter needs urgent attention!

RESIDENTS in Glenanda South are absolutely furious, after yet  another weekend of interrupted water supply, after water pipes burst on Saturday November 9 and then again on Sunday.

One of the resident’s, Yolanda Robertson from Glenanda South Community Security said it’s now gone beyond belief! “It’s happening all the time and we are sick of it.

“On Saturday at about 05:30 the water pipe burst on the corner of Vorster and Glen roads in Glenanda, with water shooting up into the sky.

“Glenanda Primary School was holding its Soap Box Derby on Saturday and the school had no water, and then consequently ran out of bottled water from the tuck shop. It was very hot and there was just no water to be had,” said a fuming Yolande. The water eventually came back on at 13:00.

“It’s absolutely pathetic. There are teams working in the area from Joburg Water, fixing all the eroded water pipes and this one on the corner of Glen and Vorster was only put in recently. Either the new pipes are faulty or the workmanship disgusting!” she added.

“It’s becoming a weekly occurrence for us to have no water. The government say we live in a first world country, first world my …..side!” said another resident who has had enough of the on-going burst water pipe saga.

Then on Sunday morning at about 05:30 again, the same water pipe burst, causing a fountain of water to spurt into the air with water gushing along Glen Road into the main drain.

An African man who runs his little business from the mobile shop he has there, once again had to stay shut. “My mobile shop is flooded again. This is terrible for my business,” he moaned.

The CHRONICLE spoke to a business owner who has a food outlet at Glenanda Shopping Centre. “It’s not on! I can’t use the coffee machine because we have no water and dishes can’t be washed, apart from the fact we need water for the bathrooms. My business is suffering because of the lack of water every week!”

Ward 23 councillor, Paul Smit, has fought tirelessly to try and get this problem sorted out. “I know the residents are sick and tired of this problem which rears its ugly head every other week! The water pipes are all being replaced but if a pipe bursts after only a few weeks there’s obviously something wrong with the materials. This matter needs urgent attention,” he said.
