Illegal dumping out of hand on Columbine Avenue

Service lane has been turned into a rubbish dumping spot by unruly residents.

MONDEOR – A Mondeor resident is at odds with neighbours and the municipality regarding a bad case of illegal dumping on a service lane that is not maintained.

Even after having followed the right procedures when reporting issues, the frustrated resident whose, home is located between Ashden Road and Cadogan Avenue, with the service lane at the back of her house, says the municipality needs to step in immediately to clean up.

The blatant illegal dumping on the service lane, which is reported to be out of control, is said to be perpetuated by other residents in the area who use the service lane as a dumping ground for their grass-cuttings and unwanted goods.

“The problem is that this dumping has attracted vagrants who scour the dumping spot looking for salvageable items and sometimes they even steal stuff in our home. We’ve had a lawnmower, ladder and other things stolen from her property,” said the resident. “The dumping is also the cause of her dogs getting sick, they pick up a sort of worm that only lives in dumping yards, the animals get sick and can’t eat. When taken to the vet they pick it up, but now it seems that someone has built a shelter in the lane.”

Ward 54 Councillor Sergio dos Santos addressed the issue briefly over the telephone, when a reporter from the CHRONICLE contacted him for a response. “Most of the time it’s the actual residents that are dumping but it’s the municipality that is not cleaning the area.”

He explained that there is a service level agreement between City Power and City Parks on the maintenance of the service lane as the problematic service lane is actually a City Power area. Although, as City Power does not have the necessary equipment to maintain the grass, they have an agreement in place with City Parks to ensure that the lane is always maintained.

More information is expected by the CHRONICLE as to how Ward 54 Councillor Dos Santos is dealing with the matter that has Mondeor residents calling for urgent intervention.
