House fires in Bassonia/Glenvista raise questions about power outages

After two house fires, one in Bassonia and one in Glenvista, over the weekend of July 18 to 20, residents are asking if the fires could have anything to do with power surges, after yet another substation was hit in Mount Pellan Drive on Saturday July 19.

BASSONIA – On Friday evening a house was on fire in Johannes Meyer Drive, Bassonia and the following afternoon, there was another house fire in Mariepskop Street, Glenvista.

“What concerns us is there doesn’t seem to be any system in place by City Power to combat these break-ins at the substations,” said a GCPF member.

“Is City Power opening cases with SAPS? If not there will be no investigation and the suspects will never be caught. There have been items found at some of the targeted substations but if SAPS are not asked to investigate, finger prints won’t be taken.

“It’s time these crimes are taken seriously,” he said.

EMS attended the fire in Johannes Meyer Drive, Bassonia.
