ABBOTTS College High School hosted a visual art and drama festival for schools in the South, which saw learners showcasing their artwork to parents on August 4 in Suideroord.
The festival also included works from learners from Regents Primary School, Robertsham Primary School and Mulbarton Primary School participated in this first of its kind festival. Prior to Saturday’s event, learners attended a two-hour art workshop on Wednesday where they were taught different principles of perspectives on arts.
Learners for drama were given monologues to prepare and given the choice to prepare their own monologue. The drama workshop took place over three days, from Wednesday to Friday. From these workshops, three learners from each school were selected to perform for the audience on Saturday.
“We started with this idea of promoting arts in schools because a lot of the science classes are quite oversubscribed because everyone wants to become a doctor, lawyer etc. So, we decided to encourage the arts in our schools. We invited Grade Seven learners with their creative art teachers from our feeder schools where we, as Abbotts, get our most Grade Eight learners from.
“We invited them to compete in this festival and the winner from visual arts, as well as drama, will receive a bursary to study at Abbotts next year,” explained Natachja Pinto, creative arts teacher at Abbotts College.
At the end of the day, both winners of the festival emerged from Robertsham Primary. Congratulations to Hatoentle Tema (drama) and Abdur Rahmaan (visual arts) with taking the win.
The school expressed their gratitude to Armre Pretorius and Dudley Hibbert, who were equally involved in the festival.
