City of Johannesburg has a renewed focus on keeping Joburg clean
Members of the community are urged to report illegal dumping on 082 779 1361 and to do their part by not littering.
THE executive mayor of Johannesburg, councillor Geoffrey Makhubo, took on the task of helping to keep the inner city clean with operation KleenaJoburg on January 4.
This operation aims to transform the inner city into a clean and safe environment for families to enjoy.
The operation also aims to ensure by-law enforcement in the inner city.
It was the second clean-up campaign and it follows a successful clean-up operation that took place on December 28 last year.
During the clean-up operation huge amounts of illegally dumped waste was collected.
Armed with a broom, gloves and bin bags the mayor was joined by councillor Mpho Moerana, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, and over a 100 community members gathered together at Joubert Park to tackle Joburg’s litter problem.
The inner city community is taking a stand against a dirty environment and wants to work with the city to keep Joburg clean.
“I am tired of seeing dirt all over town. It’s not just the city’s problem, we must all help,” said Nonhlanhla Sibanda from Ward 123 in Hilbrow.

The sentiments uttered by Sibanda are shared by the city. Although Pikitup has three shifts that cater for the inner city, it is a challenge to keep Joburg clean without the help of the community.
“We are trying to change people’s attitude towards waste and littering because a dirty environment creates health problems,” said Makhubo.
He emphasised that keeping Joburg clean is a collective responsibility that all the city’s stakeholders must take responsibility for.
