Gino’s wins best pizza in SA

South Africa's winner for best pizzerias 2021 goes to Gino's Paesa Pizzeria Restaurant.

If you want the best pizza in the South or South Africa, look no further than Gino’s Paesa Pizzeria Restaurant in Robertsham.

It was recently (October 22) voted by the public as the best pizza restaurant in South Africa, in a Pizzeria Challenge hosted by Porcupine Ridge. This feat couldn’t come at a better moment, as Gino’s will be celebrating 38 years in the South on November 1.

Gino Mazza (68), the owner, said this is great news, especially for the staff.

“We are all happy for this great news, and this will go a long way to my staff. It will be a good reference in their lives. Also, the fact that it was public through word of mouth who voted for us makes it very special.

“This business is the way of my life and I’m part of it. I would like to thank all our loyal customers throughout these years and everyone who participated in this competition,” noted Gino.

He also noted that his brother’s business in Stellenbosch came fifth in the competition.

“Congratulations to Domenico,” he said.

On their Facebook page, Porcupine Ridge said: “We are thrilled to announce that the grand prize winner, officially South Africa’s most loved pizzeria, is Gino’s in Robertsham, Johannesburg. Congratulations to Gino and his wonderful team!”

A rich history

Gino’s Paesa Pizzeria Restaurant was established on November 1, 1983. Although this was the brainchild of eldest son Gino Mazza, the entire family from father Guiseppe to mum Antonia as well as sisters Carmela and Maria and youngest brother, Domenico, were drawn into the business in true Italian style.

Today, Gino’s has two family-run restaurants independently. The Mazza family is proud of the fact that many of their original customers are loyal patrons who still frequent their restaurant, often with their children and grandchildren.

There is no doubt that many sacrifices have to be made to run a restaurant, but the owners of Gino’s believe Gino’s is more than a meal, it is a family-orientated restaurant where they do not subscribe to trends. Their ethos is on serving consistently good food at affordable prices, no matter what your age or stage.
