NWU Rugby Club made a clean sweep by winning all the matches played in the Pirates Grand Challenge finals hosted by Alberton Rugby Club on June 11.
The venue was selected by the management of NWU rugby club, who were given the option as they finished top of the log in the group stages.
The four clubs contested for the final include NWU Rugby Club, Pirates Rugby Club, Raiders and Wits Rugby Club, which set up a Varsity final.

From U19 to the first team match NWU showed they wanted to win and saw some of the best tries for the season being scored by the students from Potchefstroom.
In the second team match between NWU and Pirates, some of the best tries for the season were scored by both sides. Pirates crossed the whitewash first before NWU hit back shortly after kick-off, which set the tempo for the rest of the match with the score ending 54-20 for the men from NWU.

In the U19 match, the Pirates desperately tried to keep the men from Potchefstroom from scoring but their defence wasn’t able to keep the onslaught at bay with the men from NWU winning the match 73-13.
The U21 team from NWU played their hearts out on the field and it showed as they won Pirates 38-13.

The NWU third team faced the Raiders in a tight match where NWU came out on top, winning the match 18-3.
The big match of the day was the first teams from NWU facing Wits in a match that was set to be a repeat of the Varsity cup played in March where NWU won Wits 31-3.

NWU was first out of the blocks and was at one stage leading Wits 28-12, but Wits hit back with two tries to ensure that the final isn’t over till the last whistle blows.

NWU held on till the end to ensure a 31-26 victory completing their clean sweep of the finals.
Now with the Pirates Grand Challenge completed, the clubs will focus on the Heritage Trophy that is due to start in July.
