Celebrate Alberton rugby’s rich history with Madalas
The year 1912 will always be remembered in Alberton circles as the year that the Alberton Ruby Club was formed.
On March 20 of that historic year, the first matches were played on a rugby field prepared by the players themselves in the centre of town between 2nd and 4th Avenues in the now Alberton North.
To celebrate its 110 years of glorious years in existence, a Golden Oldies Festival, hosted by the Alberton Madalas, will be held this Saturday (June 25) at the Alberton Rugby Club in Verwoerdpark.
One and all are invited to come and join in the fun events lined up from 09:00 in the morning till late. Come pay witness to 14 Old Madala teams tackling each other on the field in the name of fun, friendship and fraternity.
And if you have had any affiliation with the rugby club in whatsoever shape or format over the years, bring along memorabilia of your time with the club and enjoy a free beer on the house.
Kiddies and family are welcome as loads of entertainment are lined up, ranging from the Ayoba train, the Ayoba swing, bull in the ring and much more.
A vehicle exhibition, featuring some of Nissan’s latest models, will form part of the day’s activities.
Various food stalls will ensure that you will not go hungry, ranging from the good ole geelvet biltong, curry and rice and chipstix.
And while enjoying a cold one in the beer garden, reminisce on the golden years of a rugby club that saw many Springboks having made their debut as Alberton players. Kevin de Klerk (lock) was certainly Alberton’s greatest Springbok who also at some point coached the Alberton first team.
Entrance fee is only R50 per vehicle, so make sure you head out to the rugby club on Saturday, Elandsfontein Drive (off Braun Road) Verwoerdpark.
To ensure your peace of mind, security at the club has been upgraded substantially over the past years with surveillance cameras installed in the parking areas.
