Weightlifting champ bags medals in Egypt
Countless hours of training and hard work have produced excellent results for weightlifting camp Laryne Jefferies from Movement Crew.
Laryne Jefferies, a member of Movement Crew, a strength and CrossFit gym in Brackenhurst, is back on home soil after recently competing in Egypt.
The self-employed couture fashion designer has made the country and the world of weightlifting proud after making her debut on the international stage.
She qualified to compete at the African Senior Championships in the 71kg weight class, which took place from October 26 to November 4.
Laryne bagged three bronze medals for snatch, clean and jerk and total score. She also secured a silver medal for the African Senior Weightlifting Clubs in the U71kg division.
She told the Alberton Record it was an honour to be able to represent South Africa at the continental championships and lift ‘with some incredibly strong women’.
Big competition
She planned to compete at the SA Championships this year. However, her coach Matthew Hurn revealed that her totals qualified her to lift at the African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt.

She then decided she wants to work towards the competition as it was an incredible opportunity.
“The excitement and nerves were high leading up to the competition as I didn’t know what to expect. But I felt as prepared as I possibly could be for the competition and ready to give it my best effort and enjoy the experience,” explained Laryne.
She thanked the overwhelming amount of support received from family, friends and the community to make the trip.
“The rush of adrenaline as you see the big platform for the first time is a feeling only a few know and then it all becomes very real. I had a few days to adjust before my competition day and the excitement was building even more. When I stepped up on the stage, the world went quiet,” she said.
Laryne reiterated that they put in countless hours of training and that they have only a few seconds on the platform to make it count.
The weightlifting medalist is now working towards competing at the world championships in Saudi Arabia in 2023 where she hopes to give an even stronger performance.
