Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club time trial session a success

Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club hosted elite runners for a time trial session in preparation for the Jackie Gibson Marathon that will be held on March 19.

Neil Basey won the Jackie Gibson Marathon in 2022 and said he will return to defend his title.

“Last year, it was my favourite marathon, and I knew I was going to win. This will be my first marathon this year, and I must say it feels great to be back,” said Basey.

Harry Maredi, Paul Roux, Neil Massey, Steve Hugo (coach), Tony Silver and Proud Chauke.

Chauke said he is going to run for the first time and he is very excited.

“I have heard about the Jackie Gibson Marathon and then decided to try it this year. I hope for the best.”

Deputy chairperson Fezile Mqhayi said they hosted this because they wanted to maintain relationships with the athletes.

“They also have a footprint in social media meaning a lot of people know them and spread the word about the marathon.”

To join the club, call 072 679 0874. Annual fees are R500 for adults aged 20 to 59, R250 for seniors aged 60 and over and R120 for juniors aged 18 to 19.

The race will take place at Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre, Kibler Park, with start times of 21.1km and 42.2km at 06:00 and 10km at 06:30 in commemoration of Jackie Gibson and his success in athletics.

Entries will be available till 17 March 2023.
