Gauteng Central takes the lead in Ringtennis Tournament

Gauteng Central recently hosted the 53rd South Africa Ringtennis Tournament at the Alberton Ringtennis courts in Florentia from April 7 to 10.

Gauteng Central hosted the 53rd South Africa Ringtennis Tournament, which saw players participate in teams from different provinces over the Easter weekend.

Gauteng Central players participated in the A, B and C divisions against Gauteng North and Sedibeng, with two Golden Oldie teams also taking part. The tournament saw seniors Johann Britz (71) and Esther Goosen (70) in action on the courts.

The long weekend’s programme comprised the announcement of SA national teams, exhibition matches and the awarding of outstanding players. They ended the tournament with a prize giving with trophies in the women’s category, men’s category, mixed category and final totals.

Felicia Sauer, president of the SA Ringtennis Board, said this was the last championship of their season.

“In all these years, it’s the first time that Gauteng Central hosted the senior tournament. We made history for Gauteng Central, especially for Alberton Ringtennis Club, which provided the facilities. What’s also special is that Gauteng Central asked us if they could get a Golden Oldies team to also take part,” she explained.

A Golden Oldies team, according to Sauer, consists of players who played the sport many years ago, with some even playing on a national level.

“That is also history, because never in all our tournaments did we have a Golden Oldies team and most of those players were players of the Alberton Ringtennis Club,” Sauer said.

AutoCity raffle tickets were also up for sale to benefit the sport ahead of their fifth World Championships later in the year.

The tournament benefited local businesses, as vendors had an opportunity to put up their stalls.
