Conradie celebrates over two decades of bank angling
Over the years, Verwoerdpark’s bank angler Barbara Conradie’s commitment to her craft drove her to new heights.
Local angler Barbara Conradie recently reached a remarkable milestone in her fishing career, celebrating her 25th year as a prominent member of the provincial A team in the exhilarating world of bank angling.

Her journey into the world of angling began in 1996, a year that marked the start of a lifelong passion. From the moment she cast her first line, it was clear that she possessed a natural talent for the sport.
Her skills quickly garnered recognition, leading her to earn a spot in the A team for her province in 1997, where she participated in the prestigious South African championships.
In 2001 and 2012, she was awarded the coveted Protea colours, a recognition presented upon exceptional athletes who represent South Africa in international competitions. She also achieved the remarkable accomplishment of receiving her Tri-Nations colours, the highest honour in bank angling.
Another level of angling
Beyond her accomplishments on the competitive circuit, Barbara has made a significant impact in the money circuits Elite and Pro Mania.
“Her presence has been felt not only through her exceptional fishing skills but also through her unwavering sportsmanship and humble demeanour. Despite her achievements, she remains grounded and strives to continuously improve, firmly believing that one is never too old to learn,” explained her friend Bernie van Nieuwenhuizen.
Van Nieuwenhuizen said Barbara’s journey in angling has not only been defined by her personal triumphs but also by the relationships she has forged along the way.
“She speaks fondly of the incredible people she has encountered and the lasting bonds that have developed on the banks of serene dams and rivers. For Barbara, fishing is not just a sport, it is a way to connect with nature, to find solace, and to embrace the camaraderie that comes with competing against the best anglers in the country,” she said.
Barbara credits her husband, Deon, as her rock, motivator, and firmest supporter.
“His unwavering belief in my abilities has provided me with the strength to overcome challenges and reach new heights. I would like to express my gratitude to my sons and grandson, who have unconditionally supported me throughout my angling journey, allowing me the freedom to pursue my passion,” said Barbara.
As she reflects on her incredible journey, she humbly dedicates this milestone to those who have stood by her side. Through her love and dedication for bank angling, she is said to have become an inspiration to aspiring anglers and a beacon of sportsmanship within her community.
“As she continues to cast her lines and explore new waters, Barbara reminds us all that true success is not measured solely by trophies and accolades, but by the love and passion we bring to the pursuits we hold dear,” Van Nieuwenhuizen said.
