Arini Vlotman is a traditionally published author who launched her debut fiction novel, Pretty Average, on April 20, at Glenvista Country Club.

Family, friends, and intimate acquaintances gathered to honour Vlotman’s accomplishment.

According to Vlotman, Pretty Average was published internationally on March 19, and due to widespread interest, they decided to offer a special version for South African readers.

“The SA book community hopped on to the release and made it what it is now. People from all over the country are asking for copies and now the special edition will be available in bookstores like Exclusive Books and Bargain Books nationally.

“I’ll also be doing book signings at various bookstores. This is a big step for a debut romance,” said Vlotman.
Vlotman grew up in Palm Ridge, a small neighbourhood in south east Johannesburg, but now resides in Alberton, New Redruth.

When she was advised that she had a better chance of being struck by lightning than becoming a writer, she concluded that standing out in the rain, waiting to be fried, was a bad idea in any case.Vlotman’s tale is not about conflict or defying the odds. As a South African, she, like everyone else, understands what it means to hustle.

However, she chose to cherish, accept, and investigate a fictional world.

She has 20 years of experience as a learning and development expert in the business world. Understandably, her debut novel would be a workplace romance.

Pretty Average is rife with arb characters, illogical regulations, and moments that would make the entire corporate world wince. Success was attained.

Arini describes Pretty Average as a contemporary fiction romance set in Johannesburg. It contains a lot of truth, especially about Johannesburg.

Finding her own way

“As an Indian female growing up in the small community of Palm Ridge, getting a job was top of the list but for as long as I can remember, writing was what I wanted to do.

“I spent almost every day at the library, although a nerd I was not, soaking in the glorious world of fiction. I found ways to write; blogs, articles, and material in any form, in my professional capacity. But romance is where my heart lies.

“My family and friends support me, but the rest of the world tells me it’s not possible. South Africa has too many issues to worry about reading a silly romance.

“But the concept of a happy-ever-after is a dream bigger than any one person. Why can’t we get lost in a world where we know everything works out?

“I’m not a doctor, lawyer, or teacher, but I am a creator. I didn’t break the mould, I just remade my own,” Vlotman explained.
