Rand Water debunks ‘poisoned dam’ WhatsApp hoax, confirms tap water is safe to drink

Rand Water would like to assure consumers that tap water is safe to drink and meets all South African drinking water quality standards.

Rand Water has dismissed as false and misleading a WhatsApp voice note circulating on social media claiming that the Vaal Dam has been “poisoned” and that tap water should only be consumed after being boiled.

The bulk water utility confirmed that there is no truth to the claims and assured consumers that tap water remains safe to drink.

Rand Water abstracts raw water from the Vaal Dam, which is subjected to a comprehensive and strictly regulated treatment process before being supplied to municipalities and consumers.

According to Rand Water, rigorous and continuous testing is carried out on both raw water and treated bulk water prior to distribution. These tests are conducted to ensure compliance with national safety and quality standards.

Recent water quality results confirm that Rand Water’s treated bulk water fully complies with the South African National Standard for Drinking Water (SANS 241).

As the bulk water services provider, Rand Water reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and confirmed that consumers may continue to safely drink water directly from the tap.

Rand Water further emphasised that any bulk water–related matters will be communicated through its official channels and urged residents to rely on verified Rand Water platforms for accurate and credible information regarding drinking water quality.
