6 arrested at Rand Easter Show appear in Booysens Magistrate’s Court

The case of the five suspects who appeared in the Booysens Magistrate Court on April 2 after being arrested at the Rand Easter Show was not placed on the court roll pending the obtaining of additional affidavits. The case will be re-enrolled after all the outstanding investigation is complete.

Officers arrested five suspects at the Rand Easter show for violating the Drug Trafficking Act.

The security manager of the exhibition provided information about a stall suspected of selling dagga products to the public.

The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime personnel, who were part of the exhibition.

They then followed up on information that led to the discovery of Cannafrica’s stall, which offered dagga products containing a dosage of 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

According to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime personnel, this is a category six drug for the public, and they further mentioned that the suspects failed to provide the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority’s (SAHPRA) licence.

Officers confiscated several dagga products sold by the suspects, with an estimated worth of just under R1m.
In a second incident, a man (39) was caught at the expo after discovering he was peddling dagga to the public.

Officers found the suspect with dagga worth an estimated R600, and he appeared at the Booysens Magistrate’s Court for the first time on April 2.

The case of five suspects was not placed on the court roll pending obtaining additional affidavits. The case will be re-enrolled once the outstanding investigation is complete.

The provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, praised the officers’ outstanding job at the show and encouraged the public to remain watchful and report any illegal activity in their neighbourhoods.
