Mondeor pool hall murder case set for trial
An 18-year-old accused of stabbing a fellow teenager to death will go on trial in January 2026.
An 18-year-old is facing a murder charge after allegedly fatally stabbing another teenager, also 18, at the Ballbreakers pool hall in Mondeor on April 5.
The accused appeared in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court again on September 23.
Magistrate Hasina Habib began proceedings with a recap of the charge against the accused.
“What is the charge against the accused, Mr Israel?” asked Magistrate Habib.
Prosecuting attorney Mr Israel confirmed: “The charge is murder, your worship.”
Defence attorney Paul Leisher then proposed that a trial date be set, saying he had reviewed the case file, chain of evidence, and medical records of the victim.
“I have reviewed the docket and chain of evidence, your worship, and I propose a trial date be set,” said Leisher.
Magistrate Habib replied: “We will hold a pretrial conference to determine if the case is ready for trial.”
During the pretrial conference, both the defence and prosecution agreed on the number of witnesses to be called and confirmed that all pretrial remedies had been exhausted.
“We need to know how long the trial will take. There were 12 witnesses. How many will be called?” asked Magistrate Habib.
“Only two or three will likely be called,” responded Israel.
“Yes, your worship, I agree. Chain evidence, medical reports, and testimony of eyewitnesses from the state won’t be disputed,” added Leisher. “Two days can be set for the trial to begin.”
Magistrate Habib then ruled: “The trial will commence on January 20, 2026. The accused remains on extended bail.”
