Thieves on run after Meyersdal armed robbery

The SAPS is searching for criminals who fled after an armed robbery at a Meyersdal service station on Saturday.

An armed robbery was reported at the Engen in Meyersdal late on January 31, prompting an urgent investigation as the robbers remain at large.

According to AfriForum Alberton, the robbery involved four people travelling in a newer model Hyundai i20.

“Two of them entered the shop while one acted as a lookout outside. One criminal was armed and assaulted a security guard and a petrol attendant. They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, two cellphones and cigarettes,” shared Afriforum.

The robbers’ last known whereabouts were on Hennie Alberts Road towards the Meyersdal Mall.

AfriForum Alberton, Fox Security, Fox Tactical, CPS Security and Expol Security responded within minutes. Despite the swift response, the criminals fled before they could be arrested.

CCTV footage from the scene includes descriptions of the criminals and is expected to assist with investigations.
Brackendowns SAPS detectives arrived later to gather further information.

AfriForum Alberton commended all the role players for their rapid response and cooperation.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, particularly when going to shops late at night.

AfriForum said only one customer noticed the robbery taking place.
