Be patient with animals if you have adopted them, advises JSPCA

The head of public relations at the JSPCA, Liana Marx, said much like it is a new adventure for people, it is the same for the animals.

The JSPCA advises the community that when adopting a pet, be patient with them.

The head of public relations at the JSPCA, Liana Marx, said just like adoption is a new adventure for people/owners, it is for the animals too.

“If the dog digs in your garden in the first few days or chews the hosepipe, please don’t fight with him. The garden is new to him, and he needs time to settle and explore. If the new cat hides, don’t fight with them or say they are unsocial.

“How would you react to entering a new home with new people for the first time? Sadly, people adopt animals but hand them back to us in less than a week, complaining they dig, destroy, run away, or seem unsocial.

“A dog digs. You have to accept that, when getting a dog, it will dig in the garden. Cats can be unsocial because they have minds of their own, but will come around once they feel safe and secure. They don’t automatically just fit in and work like apps on a phone. Show them love, patience and understanding, and they will be your best friend in no time,” said Marx.
