WATCH: Young pilot soars to success, obtains pilot licence

Juan Morton, 17, has the world at his feet after recently obtaining his private pilot license after three years of training.

In a remarkable feat of determination and passion, Juan Morton has achieved a milestone that many only dream of.

The sky seems to be the limit for the determined young pilot whose passion for flying knows no bounds.

The 17-year-old has obtained his private pilot license after three years of dedicated training. He can proudly claim to be one of the few minors to have achieved this milestone. He got his wings on February 8.

His journey into the world of aviation began at the age of 12 when he saw a plane fly over Emirates Airline Park while attending a rugby match. Since then, the Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s Grade 12 learner never looked back.

Fascinated by the freedom and adventure that flying promised, he embarked on a rigorous training regimen under the guidance of seasoned instructors at two local flight schools.

“Despite the challenges posed by balancing his studies and flight training, Juan remained steadfast in his pursuit. He spent countless hours honing his skills, mastering the intricacies of navigation, communication, and aircraft control,” explained his mother, Denise Morton.

From Juan’s first flight at Rand Airport, he said he knew flying was his passion.

“Obtaining my private licence has been a dream come true, and I am incredibly grateful for the support of my family, friends and instructors who have helped me along the way. Earning a private pilot licence is no small feat. It requires candidates to demonstrate proficiency in various areas,” Juan said.

He said it required candidates to demonstrate flight manoeuvres, emergency procedures, and aeronautical decision-making.

Additionally, candidates must pass written exams and practical tests administered by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Steadfast dedication

For Juan, the journey was not without its setbacks and challenges. However, with unwavering determination and love for the skies, he persevered through every obstacle that came his way.

According to his mother, Juan’s dedication and passion for aviation have been evident since day one.

“His commitment to excellence and his ability to remain calm under pressure are qualities that will serve him well as he continues to pursue his aviation aspirations. With his private pilot licence in hand, he looks forward to embarking on new adventures and exploring the boundless possibilities that aviation has to offer,” she said.

He is determined to continue his journey towards becoming a professional aviator.

As Juan reflects on his achievement, he hopes to inspire other young aspiring pilots to pursue their dreams with courage and perseverance.

“I want to show others that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning,” he said.
