Abandoned baby found in Rosettenville park

There is hope for any desperate mother looking to relinquish their baby through safe havens such as Angels Baby Sanctuary.

A newborn baby girl was found in the park on Lawn Street, Rosettenville, when the security company, Guardian Angels Security, was alerted.

Steve Dwarika from Guardian Angels Security then called emergency services.

In a report issued by Rescue 786 Emergency Medical Services, their operational manager, Zandre Pieterse, explained, “On April 13, Rescue 786 was dispatched to an alleged abandoned baby in the park. On arrival, we found a baby girl in a bag. She was blue and in respiratory distress. The baby was wrapped in blankets and left unattended in the park.”

The ambulance and primary response vehicle (PRV) responded, and upon arrival, stabilised the baby.

“We gave her supplemental oxygen, and she started to get more colour in her face. The baby’s vitals were stable, and we transported her to Angels Baby Sanctuary where we handed her over to the staff,” said Pieterse.

Angels Baby Sanctuary founder and chairperson, Anne Ebrahim, said, “After the discovery, Dwarika called me and I asked them to bring the baby to our sanctuary.

“The baby is estimated to have been two days old when she came to us on Saturday. Although Angels have a baby saver box where mothers can relinquish their babies safely, dumping babies is still happening in the area. We are just happy that this baby was found in time.”

A baby saver box or box of hope is a wall-mounted box designed as a last choice for desperate moms to relinquish their infant discreetly and safely instead of abandoning the child on the streets.

Angels Baby Sanctuary is still awaiting a case number from SAPS and has confirmed little girl is doing well.

“We took her to the clinic to get her Road to Health card and South Rand Hospital for a medical check-up,” added Ebrahim.

Ebrahim encourages desperate mothers to use the box located at 273 Johannesburg Road, La Rochelle or contact Angels Baby Sanctuary via email at admin@angelsbaby.org or call 011 045 6401 or 081 049 6228 if they need any advice or assistance.

“For every three babies abandoned, only one makes it alive. We as a community must work together to prevent this from happening.”
