WATCH: Glenvista High celebrates 2024’s matriculants at valediction ceremony

Parents come in numbers to see their children enjoy their final moments as Glenvista High School learners.

Glenvista High School hosted a valediction ceremony to honour the matric Class of 2024 in the school’s hall on January 25, marking a milestone for the departing matriculants.

The ceremony began with welcoming remarks from the school’s acting head of department for Afrikaans FAL, followed by a Bible reading and prayer led by the 2025 Representative Council of Learners (RCL).

The new RCL president, Larc Demakulu, then gave a speech, setting the tone for a memorable evening.

Parents saw their children enjoy their final moments as learners, celebrating their academic achievements and dedication throughout their schooling.

Principal Dr Thobile Morgan said, “We’re here to say goodbye to you, but we’re not saying go and don’t come back. Once you’re successful, come back and reinvest in the school.”

Morgan also commended the students on their resilience, “It was a challenging year for all of us, but you did well. I commend your resilience.”

Awards and achievements

The ceremony honoured outstanding students in various categories, with awards presented by faculty members.

Students receive cash vouchers for each distinction earned.

Laude dignus award

Presented by the deputy principal for academics, Amanda Ferreira, and further education and training grade head, Mr Dube, this award recognises the highest achievers in subjects.

English, economics, Afrikaans, life sciences, and physical sciences: Ntwenhle Myeni;

Information technology: Divine Ntambwe;

Geography: Uthandolwethu Moyo;

Engineering graphics and design: Vhuhwavho Masengana;

Accounting: Tshenolo Thahane;

Mathematics and business studies: Belonda Nkashamo;

Mathematical literacy and computer applications technology: Patience Mathambo;

Visual arts: Jonathon Isineyi;

IsiZulu: Asakhe Ntontela;

Life orientation: Kheya-Janika Gowan;

Consumer studies: Sebenzile Shiburi;

Tourism: Sibongesihle Manzini;

History: Tshegofatso Mogoai.

Academic achievement award

Presented by Morgan, this award recognises the top 10 matric learners with the highest overall averages after the final exams. Each received a gold certificate: Myeni 87.3%, Nkashamo 84.1%. Thahane 83.6%, Tshegofatso Magoni 78.8%, Gugulethu Mkhonzo 78.7%, Leanne Ndlovu 78.6%, Moyo 77.6%, Shiburi 77.3%, Tumelo Lesufi 77.1% and Bionca Mlauzi 76.6%.

Distinctions and awards

The learners achieved 126 distinctions across various subjects and, in recognition, were awarded cash vouchers for each distinction.

Divine Ntambwe and Yukta Ramhyth.

The linguistic award went to the best matriculant in two of the three languages offered at the school and was received by Myeni.

The Umbono Fund managers’ award, recognising excellence in accounting, business studies and economics, went to Thahane.

The consumer studies award went to Shiburi.

The Design School of Southern Africa award went to the top visual arts matriculant for exceptional creativity, innovation, and originality – Jonathan Isineyi.

The Grant computer science award recognised the best IT student – Ntambwe.

The scientific excellence awards went to the top matriculant who excelled in two of the three science-related subjects (maths, physical sciences, and life sciences) – Myeni.

The top mathematics achiever award went to Nkashamo.

The physical science award went to Myeni.

The prestigious Dux scholar award went to Myeni, the top-performing learner with the highest overall academic average. He was recognised for outstanding dedication, discipline and excellence.

Myeni attained seven distinctions, with an 87.3% average.

A night to remember

The ceremony was a night of celebration, nostalgia and well-deserved recognition for the matric Class of 2024.

The event highlighted their achievements and served as a farewell to a chapter filled with memories and growth.
