City of Joburg’s back to school campaign empowers disadvantaged students

City of Joburg speaker of council donates school shoes to disadvantaged learners.

City of Joburg speaker of council Nobuhle Mthembu donated new school shoes to 100 young learners at primary schools around Johannesburg.

This generous act is part of the office of the speaker’s Back to School campaign, launched in early January, to support disadvantaged learners as they begin their new academic year.

Glenryck SA, which funded the purchase of the school shoes, made possible the donation.

Speaking at the handover event in Eikenhof on January 31, Mthembu emphasised the significance of the campaign in ensuring no child was left behind because of financial constraints.

“We came to the schools not only to share words of encouragement but also to extend a helping hand as these young learners embark on their 2025 academic journey,” said the speaker.

Learners received new school shoes.

She also thanked Glenryck SA for their commitment to the initiative.

“This partnership is a testament to the importance of the collaboration between government and the private sector,” she continued.

The campaign will continue across other regions in the city, reaching more learners in need and ensuring they start their school year on the right foot.

As the speaker, she is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of young learners.
