Sports and Recreation activities keep children engaged and safe

Keeping learners active and safe.

The City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department is making a positive impact on the lives of school-going children through its holiday programme.

The initiative, which runs during school breaks, ended on April 9. The initiative provides a safe and engaging environment for kids to participate in various sports and recreation activities.

A fun and supportive environment

At the South Rand Recreation Centre, children aged 10-16 from local schools, including Kenilworth High and Crestview Primary, enjoyed their favourite sports, such as netball, football, and running.

Despite the rain, the young participants were enthusiastic and excited to be part of the programme. The event featured snacks and meals, courtesy of sponsors, and was guided by centre officials and relevant stakeholders.

More than just sports

The programme’s operations manager, Thabo Nkwadi, emphasised that the initiative goes beyond sports, offering guidance, counselling, life skills, and mentorship.

“This holistic approach aims to support the overall well-being of the children, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment during the holidays,” said Nkwadi.

By participating in these events, youngsters can develop their skills, build confidence, and stay engaged in positive activities.

The City of Johannesburg’s commitment to supporting its future leaders is evident in this initiative, which promotes physical and mental well-being, nurtures talent, and keeps young people safe.
