South Rand Hospital celebrates nurses and earns top safety accreditation

Hospital improves OHS compliance from 86% to 93% as MEC honours nurses' role in strengthening healthcare at annual Nurses’ Day event

South Rand Hospital received a Certificate of Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) during its Nurses’ Day celebration event on May 28.

The event was organised in collaboration with the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA).

The theme of the event was centered around the phrase, ‘Our nurses, our future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies’.

This is aimed at recognising the vital role of nurses in healthcare and foster a sense of belonging among them.

The hospital’s hard work paid off, with an impressive improvement in Occupational Health and Safety compliance, from 86% in 2023/24 to 93% in 2024/25.

This achievement reflected the hospital’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for patients and staff. The certificate was a testament to the dedication and efforts of the hospital’s management and staff in ensuring a high level of compliance with OHS standards.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, delivered a keynote address, highlighting the importance of investing in a healthy and well-supported nursing workforce.

In her address, she emphasised that” “Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system, and we must prioritise their well-being and development to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

“Today, we gather to celebrate the tireless efforts of our nurses, who work selflessly to ensure the health and well-being of our communities. As we recognise their contributions, we must also acknowledge the challenges they face and commit to supporting them in their noble profession.

“By investing in our nurses, we are investing in the future of our healthcare system. Let us continue to work together to create a healthcare environment that is conducive to excellence, innovation, and compassion.” she continued.

The event was a celebration of the nursing profession, with morale-boosting initiatives and activities designed to foster a sense of inclusiveness and belonging among nurses.
