Snow may fall as icy cold snap grips Gauteng this week

As the new week begins, residents are urged to prepare for icy temperatures, rain, and even a chance of snow in parts of Gauteng.

As we get ready for a new week of school runs, early morning work commutes, and life’s everyday hustle, a strong cold front is expected to hit Gauteng, bringing icy temperatures, rain, and even a chance of snow.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning that Monday and Tuesday, June 9-10, will be partly cloudy and cool to cold, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. In the southern and southeastern parts of the country, widespread rainfall and snow are expected.

Gauteng Weather has issued an alert saying there’s a small chance of snow in parts of the province from Monday evening into Tuesday. This is due to what they’re calling an intense cold snap.

According to forecasts, Monday will bring a low of 1°C and a high of 13°C, while Tuesday could drop to -1°C with a maximum of just 11°C. While snow is unlikely for most areas, there’s a small chance of flurries in parts of the province.

Conditions will gradually warm from Wednesday through Friday, with clear to partly cloudy skies and highs reaching up to 18°C.

With this in mind, residents are urged to dress warmly, keep heaters safe, and look out for those more vulnerable to the cold, especially young children, the elderly, and pets.

Make sure you have extra blankets ready, check that school uniforms include warm layers, and consider helping neighbours who may not be able to keep warm.

While weather forecasts may still change slightly, it’s best to stay prepared. Keep an eye on reliable weather sources for updates.

Stay safe, stay warm, and if we do see snow, let’s enjoy the beauty of it while remembering to look after one another.
