There’s also a chance of snowfall in some mountainous areas of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, according to SAWS.
Residents are reminded to keep warm, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly, young children and pets.
As the country faces severe winter conditions, motorists are urged to exercise heightened caution when travelling. Freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and reduced visibility contribute to hazardous driving conditions, increasing the risk of accidents.
Driving tips for winter conditions
To navigate winter roads safely, consider the following recommendations:
• Reduce speed: Driving at lower speeds allows for longer braking distances on slippery surfaces.
• Increase following distance: Maintain a greater distance from the vehicle ahead to provide ample time to react to sudden stops.
• Use headlights wisely: Keep headlights on low beam to enhance visibility in mist, fog, and snow.
• Stay alert for hazards: Be vigilant for fallen trees, debris, or icy patches that may obstruct the road.
• Avoid sudden movements: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly to prevent skidding.
• Ensure vehicle maintenance: Check that tyres, brakes, lights, and wipers are in optimal condition.
Additional precautions
Before embarking on a journey, take the following steps:
• Monitor weather and traffic updates: Stay informed about current conditions and road closures.
• Pack an emergency kit: Include items such as a blanket, water, snacks, a torch, and a first aid kit.
• Keep fuel tanks full: Maintain at least half a tank of fuel to avoid running out during delays.
• Clear ice: Remove all ice from windows, mirrors, and lights to ensure maximum visibility.
Community support
Communities are encouraged to look out for one another, especially vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport commuters. If you observe someone in difficulty, offer assistance or alert the authorities.
