Cosmic Haven hosts transformative youth dialogue

In honour of Mandela Day, Cosmic Haven empowered young people to speak up, lead change, and build safer, more inclusive communities in Johannesburg South.

Cosmic Haven recently hosted its largest Youth Dialogue to date at the Mondeor Baptist Church, uniting 50 teenagers from Ennerdale, Finetown, Mondeor, Lenasia and Eldorado Park.

Organised by youth, for youth, the initiative aimed to create a sacred and empowering space where young people could speak freely, be heard and reflect on their roles in building safer and more inclusive communities.

In a society where young voices are often marginalised, Cosmic Haven remains steadfast in its belief that every young person’s story matters, their pain is valid and their vision for the future is essential.

The dialogue focused on key issues affecting today’s youth, including school safety, the importance of mental health support and how young people can lead change in their communities.

“We noticed that youth participation across Johannesburg South is relatively low,” said the organising team. “Our goal was to bring young people together and explore how they can create safe spaces for themselves and others.”

Participants had honest conversations about substance abuse, limited public awareness and a lack of civic involvement. Facilitators guided these discussions and helped unpack how these challenges often overlap.

Through interactive sessions, they equipped attendees with practical tools and encouraged them to take small but impactful steps toward positive change.

“Young people may not hold the positions of government officials or ward councillors,” one facilitator said. “But they do have a voice, and that voice can influence their peers, families and wider communities.”

A highlight of the day was the strong participation of young boys. “We were thrilled to see many young men joining the conversation,” said a Cosmic Haven team member. “Boys and young men play a vital role in the fight against gender-based violence. Creating spaces for open dialogue helps promote healthy masculinity and supports long-term prevention.”

More than just a once-off event, the Youth Dialogue is part of an ongoing effort. Cosmic Haven hopes it will inspire continued action and instil the belief that young people have the power to create real and lasting change.
