South Hills hosts inspiring self-defence session on Women’s Day
Participants of all ages learned life-saving skills, their rights, and practical self-defence techniques in a community-driven event promoting safety, unity, and resilience.
In celebration of Women’s Day, women of all ages gathered at South Hills’ South Rand Recreation Centre for a powerful and inspiring self-defence session that went beyond physical techniques on August 9.
The event, hosted in partnership with Pomeroy Community Development NPO, HWAB Self Defence, the South African Police Service (SAPS), social development under the City of Johannesburg, and other community stakeholders, provided participants with vital skills and knowledge to protect themselves in multiple ways.
Women learned CPR, how to identify and respond to gender-based violence, how to obtain protection orders, and their rights as victims.
The day culminated in practical self-defence training, equipping attendees with effective, easy-to-remember moves to help them stay safe in real-life situations.
In addition to the learning, the atmosphere was one of unity and care.
Mr Gershan generously donated fresh fruit for the attendees, with Pomeroy Community Development NPO assisting in the logistics of distributing the fruit and capturing memorable moments of the day.
The presence of SAPS and social development reinforced the message that community safety and well-being are shared responsibilities.
The event was a reminder of the strength, resilience, and rights of women in the community. It demonstrated that empowerment comes from knowledge, preparation, and solidarity.
As one attendee said, “Today I feel stronger, not just in my body, but in my mind and spirit too.”
