Kibler Park model seeks support for dream opportunity to New York City

Valverna Craven has overcome challenges and rediscovered her passion for modelling and with an invite to New York Fashion Week in hand, she’s looking for sponsors to help her inspire others and represent Mzansi abroad.

A 23-year-old aspiring model from Kibler Park has been invited to walk the runway at the prestigious New York Fashion Week and is calling on the public and local businesses to help make her dream a reality.

Valverna Craven, who describes herself as confident and passionate about empowering others, will represent South Africa on one of the biggest fashion stages in the world. She now seeks sponsorship to cover her return flights, accommodation, and basic living costs during her stay in New York.

“This opportunity means a lot to me,” said Valverna. “It’s not just about walking the runway, but showing young girls that anything is possible if you work hard and stay true to yourself.”

Early beginnings in modelling

Originally from Ennerdale, Valverna moved to Kibler Park after completing primary school. Her modelling journey began in Grade Two, where she quickly stood out and went on to win several titles. She also took part in ballroom dancing during her early modelling years.

However, when she reached high school, she paused both modelling and dancing to focus on hockey—another passion of hers.

“I was very good at the sport and was scouted twice to play overseas,” she explained. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t go due to various reasons. It was heartbreaking, and I lost my passion for the sport.”

After this setback, Valverna found her way back to the world of modelling. “I felt more connected to it and knew it was something I truly loved,” she said.

A life-changing meeting

She joined the family business, The Supreme Water Company, and soon became the face of the brand. Her confidence and presence started to draw attention, and a chance meeting would change her life.

One day, she was asked to attend a business meeting in Sandton in place of her sister and brother-in-law.

“I was nervous and forgot my speech. I looked around the room full of strangers and asked myself what to do,” she recalled. “With just a water bottle in my hand, I decided to believe in myself and started speaking from the heart.”

Her confidence during that meeting impressed one of the attendees, Renaldo Cortez, coach of the Soweto Panthers basketball team, international basketball player, and founder of the fashion label The House of Renaldo Cortez. He approached Valverna and asked if she would be interested in walking at New York Fashion Week.

“I was shocked and filled with excitement,” said Valverna. “My dream of gracing a global runway is finally coming true.” She went through an interview process and completed all the requirements. Not long after, she received an official email confirming her place at New York Fashion Week.

Sponsorship needed

With the event fast approaching, Valverna is seeking sponsors to help her get to New York. She hopes to travel with two support members and needs funding for flights, accommodation, and daily expenses while abroad.

“This is not just about me,” she said. “It’s about representing South Africa and inspiring other young girls who come from communities where opportunities like this seem out of reach.”

Once back in South Africa, Valverna plans to launch a pageant competition to give aspiring models from the South a platform to pursue their dreams.

She is already receiving support from the organisation WOMan NPO. Chairperson Theophellous Chabalala said:

“We are thrilled to be part of Valverna’s journey and we are here to support her every step of the way. She is a driven young lady, and we wish her all the best.”

Valverna believes this journey is just the beginning. “I want to remind everyone, especially young girls, to never give up, no matter what challenges they face. Your dreams are valid.”
