A tribute to honor Babita Deokaran's memory was held as her family demand justice.

A memorial service was held on 23 August to honour the life and legacy of Babita Deokaran, a corruption whistleblower who was assassinated in 2021.

The service took place at 400 Columbine Street in Winchester Hills, where many gathered to pay their respects to a woman who stood up for what was right, even in the face of danger.

Deokaran’s family was present at the memorial, seeking justice for the masterminds behind her brutal assassination.

Her brother, Rakesh Deokaran, spoke about the impact of her death and the importance of her legacy.

“My sister’s assassination was brutal, but her memory lives on as an example for everyone to do the right thing,” said Deokaran.

“We demand justice for those responsible for her murder. I also hope that South Africans follow her example and stand up for what is right. We need more people like her,” he added.

The memorial service was attended by notable figures, including Zwelinzima Vavi, General Secretary of the South African Federation of Trade Unions, who came to pay his respects.

“We must honour Babita by rooting out corruption in SA. She is an example for us all to follow. Lawlessness must not be tolerated,” said Vavi.

Deokaran’s courage in exposing corruption has inspired many, and her family continues to push for those responsible for her death to be brought to justice.

Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko also paid tribute to Deokaran’s memory.

The MEC outlined that the government is committed to legislative reforms to combat corruption.
