Hard lockdown for Joburg South during G20 Summit

Residents are urged to plan ahead as strict lockdown, no-fly zone, and traffic disruptions take effect around Nasrec and FNB Stadium.

Johannesburg south residents are advised to plan as the city gears up for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The summit will take place from November 21 to 24 at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure has announced that the area around the FNB Stadium and Nasrec Expo Centre will be a strictly no-fly zone for manned aircraft and drones from November 21 to 24.

Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili warned that there would be limited access to areas surrounding the summit venues.

“We confirm that during this time, we will be implementing a hard lockdown in the area,” she said.

This means that individuals without valid accreditation will not be allowed near the Nasrec Expo Centre and FNB Stadium.

The hard lockdown will include thorough inspections of vehicles entering the premises.

Mosikili urged residents to expect disruptions. “All vehicles in this vicinity will be inspected thoroughly before being allowed to enter any premises.”

Joburg south residents are advised to plan their commutes accordingly. Residents are urged to avoid the FNB Stadium and Nasrec Expo Centre unless they are attending the summit.

Joburg south motorists will be affected by the closures of the N12 (Southern Bypass), M1 and R21 roads. Please use alternative routes during the summit.

Roads will open once the delegation convoys have passed through. A specific time for how long that will take was not given.

“We urge members of the public to take note of these identified route road closures and to cooperate with law enforcement authorities,” Mosikili said.

Residents are advised to plan and stay informed about road closures and security measures.
