Backyard dwellers from Chief Albert Luthuli in Daveyton visited the Housing Department offices in Alberton on December 15 to protest about what they described as a lack of communication regarding their housing applications.

According to the group’s chairperson, Bhekani Ntshangase, residents submitted the required documents for verification around September or October this year.

“The reason we are here is that the department verified people and then received no response from the housing department.

“There’s no one informing us of what’s happening, and we saw the need to come here to get clarity,” said Ntshangase.

He added that during their visit, housing officials informed the group that all residents who had been verified would be allocated housing.

“Fortunately, the Housing Department told us they will ensure that all verified residents are allocated homes,” he said.

The Alberton Record attempted to obtain a comment from the Housing Department in Alberton but was advised to direct enquiries to the Department of Human Settlements.
