State continues to seek victim statements for further investigation
The prosecution confirmed that they intend to add new charges, and the accused will be charged according to the SA Immigration Act.
A joint operation between law enforcement led to the rescue of 12 boys and the arrest of a foreign national suspected of kidnapping on January 5. The accused, from Ethiopia, appeared in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on April 24.
The kidnapping charge against the accused, in connection with a Mulbarton kidnapping, will be withdrawn by the prosecution. The matter, initially listed as a kidnapping case, appeared before Magistrate Vele.
The State indicated that further investigation is required and that additional information from the victims is needed.
The prosecution confirmed that they intend to add a new charge against the accused, which will relate to a contravention of Section 42 of the South African Immigration Act, relating to aiding an illegal foreigner.
Defence attorney Mr Maleke requested a longer postponement to allow for victim statements to be obtained and reviewed. The prosecution informed the court that some statements are already in the district court’s possession.
Magistrate Vele then granted a postponement.
The case will return to the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on May 26 for further proceedings, including the formal addition of charges and review of victim statements.
