Parkrun SA hits historic milestone with one million participants

Rietvlei parkrun, which is located on Swartkoppies Road, is one of the 220 parkruns operating in South Africa that has contributed to the millionth participant landmark.

November 16 will see the one millionth person volunteer or complete a parkrun.

Parkrun South Africa is due to reach this milestone 13 years after being established with 29 participants.

“We are delighted to have played a small part in contributing to this milestone. It is such a big number, but parkrun is also about the small things see every week – the smiles, the friendships, and the friendly welcoming community we have created.

“Thank you to all our volunteers who make it possible each week,” said Rietvlei parkrun director Amy Berry.
Rietvlei parkrun, located on Swartkoppies Road, is one of the 220 parkruns operating in South Africa that have contributed to this monumental milestone. Over 42 500 people have taken part over the 11 years Rietvlei parkrun has been in existence.

These parkruns aim to ensure people participate in fun physical activity, keep fit and be healthy. They encouraged more participants to join the fun.

Bruce Fordyce, the president of parkrun South Africa, also shared his excitement about the millionth parkrun landmark. He said: “I am excited to see what is going to happen next with parkrun in South Africa.

“There are so many people who would benefit from joining parkrun; whether to walk, jog, run or volunteer. We look forward to another million South Africans signing up over the next few years.”
